Although not SMS all the way through, many carriers support taking an inbound email and converting that to SMS and sending that on to the device. We use that, and the message arrives with the sender's display name or Notes name as the case may be. If the target user is Verizon, for example, send email to "phonenum@vtext.com" and it seems to work fine.
